James R. Cates ~ Christian Fiction Author

Why do I write?

That is a question that many have ask me in some form. There is no two authors that will answer that question the same way. There may be a million reasons authors write. I can tell you I only have one.

I began looking for something that helped suppliment the family income. Everything that I got started in said ‘read leadership books.’ So I began reading leadership books. I read through many John C. Maxwell and Joel Olsteen books.

In the process of reading one of the Joel Olstean books it said ‘If you want to know what God has for your life, in prayer, look into your heart and see what God has left there.’ That struck me and the only thing that I could come up with was ‘Trainer.’ At that time only God and I knew what that meant but that was enough.

I began working on the rough draft letting the book take the course it needed to take. The further the rough draft got the more I looked into publishing. I found Holy Fire Publishing through a mom and pop book store in town. They published the book after waiting for the completion of the rough draft, editing, rewriting, and more rewriting.

I wondered if the time this took they would decide not to publish the book. This being my first book, It surprised me that the publisher waited that long for me. That shows how much I knew about publishing. I’m sure I will be learning for a long time to come.

The story is unique as I said. For all the authors reading this, think about your own story that got you started writing. Let’s fill this page full of stories of different authors. Send me your story and I will put it on this page.
